I say no. Why? because here we are tring to stop illigals but yet lets hire 2 million drivers from the same place where we're trying to stop people from coming threw illigaily. What are we hipacetes. Iam a truck driver and I belive the more we allowed this to keep going on in the long run would allow the american truck driver to be a american past time. Because if you owned a billion dollar company. You would rather pay a company driver 15 cents a mile conpared to 45/50 cents a mile, and a owner operator 25 cents then 96 cents to 1.10 mile. The other thing accidents are going to go way up. These driver act as if the driving in the indy 500. "I was in dallas one time changing lanes. I looked the truck behind me was three truck spaces . When I looked again after in the middle of lane changing he was now on my rare I took action and swang back to the right he then swang right and the left and our trailers smacked togehter he put me on the shoulder while he kept going. His plates said mexico. The need to keep to boarder transfers and only that. Then the candians are still after years only import export so I don't even find it fair to the candians.
As a truck driver I have been to many border towns to pick up loads
as it stands now the mexican trucks are allowed to go something like 2 miles into the states
Now while waiting to get my loads I have seen MANY MANY mexican trucks that by no means would even come close to passing a D.O.T. inspection--- even seen 1 truck that did not have a body just a motor on a frame with a seat and wind shield !!!
NOW DO YOU REALLY WANT THESE SUBSTANDARD TRUCKS GOING DOWN THE ROAD NEXT TO YOU WITH YOUR FAMILY IN THE CAR????
Now lets say they buy brand new trucks !!! you still have the MEXICAN DRIVER factor going on--anyone who has ever been to mexico knows exactly what i am talking about----THEY HAVE FEW RULES AND THEY DON'T OBEY THE ONES THEY DO HAVE !!!
Very few if any of the mexican truck drivers can read english to obey OUR RULES OF THE ROAD or even read highway signs
And it will only be a matter of time till PACO decides he is not making enough money driving that truck and decides to SUPPLEMENT HIS INCOME with more lucrative payloads if you know what i mean !!!!
As it stands right now, there are over 300% more CDL holders in the united states than there are truck driving positions available--- DO YOU KNOW WHY???/
Because truck drivers have been taking pay DECREASES over the last 20 years and many qualified truck drivers have left the industry because of the working conditions and pay but have still kept their qualifications to drive a truck
FYI: the government does not require the trucking industry to pay time and a half for over time anymore--- how would you like to be forced to work 14 hours a day/ 6 days a week for straight time???
NOW SHOULD WE ALLOW THE MEXICAN TRUCKS AND DRIVERS INTO THE UNITED STATES TO ENDANGER OUR ROADS ????
OR SHOULD WE TREAT THE QUALIFIED AMERICAN TRUCK DRIVERS BETTER SO THEY WILL COME BACK TO THE INDUSTRY AND HAVE SAFE DRIVERS AND TRUCKS ON OUR ROADS???

Since you are a truck driver yourself, you may be a bit biased. First, lets look at some of the points you make that are not particularly strong arguments:
-the drivers are not citizens – we have many workers in this country that are not citizens. The drivers would not be illegal, since by definition we would make them legal truck drivers…
-pay is lower. This hurts your job, but helps consumers, and possibly the overall economy. I know the feeling because I work in IT, and have seen tech wages driven way down by outsourcing to India. 10 years ago a recent grad could expect a starting salary of $100k, now 10 yrs experience might buy a $40k job as a temp. This has hurt my line of work, but boosted the tech we see in this country significantly. Should we force all American technology to be made by American workers?
-Safety. Why would the drivers be less safe? because they are Mexican? That’s as foolish an argument as if I were to say that white drivers are worse because they are white. If we crack down on safety and regulate properly, then that issue goes away, if it even is an issue. I actually read a report that showed fewer accidents among Mexican truck drivers….
You can probably tell, I think we ought to allow it. The problems you raise are real, but they also have solutions. I don’t think truck drivers should be immune from international competition any more then my job is. You might be able to leverage the change to get yourself an even better job by training the new truckers, or overseeing them for a company, etc. That’s what I did. After all, if everyone thought like you, the US would not be the economical leader it is today.

Since many of these truck driving companies work for the drug cartel.We would see increase in smuggling of drugs,illegals. Until Mexico can fix their country we should not be subjected to many of their drivers coming here with illegal loads.Mexico does not require drug testing nor do they have any data bases containing information about their truck drivers
